Amazon Athena announces availability of engine version 2

Today, Amazon Athena announced general availability of a new query engine version, Athena engine version 2\.
Athena engine version 2 includes several performance enhancements and new feature capabilities such as [federated queries](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/athena/latest/ug/connect-to-a-data-source.htm), schema evolution support, additional [geospatial](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/athena/latest/ug/geospatial-functions-list-v2-function-name-changes-and-new-functions.html#geospatial-functions-list-v2-new-functions) functions, support for reading nested schema to reduce cost, and [performance enhancements](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/athena/latest/ug/engine-versions-reference.html#engine-versions-reference-0002) in JOIN, ORDER BY, and AGGREGATE operations. You can upgrade your entire account or specific workgroups to engine version 2 on the Edit workgroups page of the Athena console.
