You can now launch AWS Cloud9 development environments with [Amazon Linux 2](/amazon-linux-2/) (AL2). Amazon Linux 2 is the next generation of Amazon Linux, a Linux server operating system from Amazon Web Services (AWS). It provides a secure, stable, and high performance execution environment to develop and run cloud and enterprise applications. AWS Cloud9 is a cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE) that lets you write, run, and debug your code with just a browser. It includes a code editor, debugger, and terminal. Cloud9 comes pre-packaged with essential tools for popular programming languages including JavaScript, Python, PHP, and more, so you don’t need to install files or configure your development machine to start new projects.
To get started, create a new AWS Cloud9 environment using the Cloud9 management console, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), [AWS CloudFormation](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSCloudFormation/latest/UserGuide/aws-resource-cloud9-environmentec2.html), or your favorite API. For further information about Cloud9 and launching new environments [including AL2 support](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cloud9/latest/APIReference/API%5FCreateEnvironmentEC2.html#cloud9-CreateEnvironmentEC2-request-imageId) please refer to the documentation pages for Cloud9\.
