Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition now supports PostgreSQL major version 13 in AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. [PostgreSQL 13](https://www.postgresql.org/docs/13/release-13.html) includes improved functionality and performance from enhancements such as de-duplication of B-tree index entries, improved performance for queries that use partitioned tables, incremental sorting to accelerate data sorts, parallel processing of indexes with the VACUUM command, more ways to monitor activity within a PostgreSQL database, new security capabilities, and more. This release also adds support for bool\_plperl, which simplifies writing Perl procedures.
With PostgreSQL 13 on Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition you can create time series data tables with improved data ingestion rates of several hundred thousands of metrics per second for use cases such as storing DevOps metrics or tracking business metrics (e.g., daily sales). To learn more, read the [AWS blog on time series data on PostgreSQL](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/database/designing-high-performance-time-series-data-tables-on-amazon-rds-for-postgresql/).
To use the new version, create a new [Aurora PostgreSQL](/rds/aurora/) database instance with just a few clicks in the [Amazon RDS Management Console](https://console.aws.amazon.com/console/home). Please review the [Aurora documentation](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/AuroraUserGuide/USER%5FUpgradeDBInstance.PostgreSQL.html) to learn more. With this launch PostgreSQL 13 is available in [all commercial regions](/about-aws/global-infrastructure/regional-product-services/), including AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, supported by Aurora PostgreSQL.
[Amazon Aurora](/rds/aurora/) combines the performance and availability of high-end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of open source databases. It provides up to three times better performance than the typical PostgreSQL database, together with increased scalability, durability, and security. For more information, please visit the [Aurora product page](/rds/aurora/). To get started with Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition, take a look at our [getting started](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/AuroraUserGuide/CHAP%5FGettingStartedAurora.html) page.
