Today, Amazon Lex announces language support for South African English. [Amazon Lex](/lex/) is a service for building conversational interfaces into any application using voice and text. Amazon Lex provides deep learning powered automatic speech recognition (ASR) for converting speech to text, and natural language understanding (NLU) to recognize the intent of the text so you can build applications with highly engaging user experiences and lifelike conversational interactions. With the addition of South African English, you can build and expand your conversational experiences to better understand and engage your customer base.
Amazon Lex can be applied to a diverse set of use cases such as virtual agents, interactive voice response systems, self-service chatbots, or application bots. Language support for South African English is available in all [AWS Regions](/about-aws/global-infrastructure/regional-product-services/) where [Amazon Lex](/lex/) operates. To learn more, visit the Amazon Lex [documentation](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/lexv2/latest/dg/how-languages.html) page.
