As part of our ongoing efforts to streamline the Azure Storage portfolio and deliver enhanced performance, scalability, and cost efficiency, we are announcing the retirement of all General purpose v1 (GPv1) storage accounts. This includes legacy blob storage and Files accounts configurations. Key Dates * October 1st, 2025: Public announcement. * October 13th, 2026: Final retirement. All remaining GPv1 accounts will be transitioned to GPv2. What’s Changing: The following account types will be retired: * General purpose v1 (GPv1) storage accounts (all redundancy options) * Legacy blob storage accounts. * Files storage accounts hosted on GPv1. Customers are encouraged to migrate to General Purpose v2 (GPv2) or specialized alternatives such as BlockBlobStorage or FileStorage, depending on workload requirements. **Automatic migration warning** After October 13, 2026, all existing GPv1 accounts will be auto migrated over to a GPv2 account, which may result in higher billing costs. Your decision not to migrate an existing GPv1 account will be construed as consent for Microsoft to migrate the account on your behalf.
