We’re announcing the general availability of Azure File Storage, which provides fully managed file shares in the cloud. Because Azure File Storage exposes file shares by using the Server Message Block 3.0 (SMB) protocol, which is the predominantly used file-share protocol for existing on-premises applications. This simplifies moving your existing applications to the cloud. Azure File Storage allows applications to mount file shares from anywhere in the world, so your on-premises applications can take advantage of cloud storage without change. Azure File Storage also implements the REST API protocol, which enables you to develop modern applications that integrate with existing applications. For more details, please read [Azure File Storage, now generally available](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/azure-file-storage-now-generally-available/).
