AKS virtual nodes allows you to elastically provision additional pods inside Azure [Container Instances](https://azure.com/functions?url=https%3A%2F%2Fazure.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fservices%2Fcontainer-instances%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cb0800bf7222f489967a908d63f88caf5%7C72f988bf86f141af91ab2d7cd011db47%7C1%7C0%7C636766254081763874&sdata=qB3LmSMso9xzqPpW%2FbrNHgDMGH%2BhEwjMk%2B1OApJZpL8%3D&reserved=0) that start in seconds. With a few clicks in the Azure portal, you can turn on the virtual node feature and get the flexibility and portability of a container-focused experience in an AKS environment – and there’s no need to manage additional compute resources. This feature is powered by the open source [Virtual Kubelet](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/azure-sphere-ecosystem-accelerates-innovation/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2FVirtual-Kubelet%2FVirtual-Kubelet&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cb0800bf7222f489967a908d63f88caf5%7C72f988bf86f141af91ab2d7cd011db47%7C1%7C0%7C636766254081743845&sdata=l%2FySpfUDm7ieATFh8QuNvp1bUbZSaiq4L38oDa4YagU%3D&reserved=0) technology, and is now available to the public.
