Starting 5 July 2021, customers who don’t have an existing account on Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 will not be able to create Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 accounts. We recommend [Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/blobs/data-lake-storage-introduction) for all your analytics needs. Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 will be retired on 29 Feb 2024\. For more information, see the [official announcement](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/updates/action-required-switch-to-azure-data-lake-storage-gen2-by-29-february-2024/).
If you have one or more existing Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1 accounts, we will continue to allow the creation of new accounts. Please note that we strongly recommend that you [migrate your Azure Data Lake Storage Gen1](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/blobs/data-lake-storage-migrate-gen1-to-gen2) account to Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2\. In addition to providing limitless storage, [Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2](https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/storage/data-lake/) offers a rich set of capabilities for your analytics such as:
* Lower cost
* Tiered storage
* High availability and disaster recovery
* Rich integration with other analytics services including, but not limited to, Azure Synapse Analytics, HDInsight 4.0 and Azure Databricks.
Refer to the [ADLS Gen1 to Gen2 migration document](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/blobs/data-lake-storage-migrate-gen1-to-gen2) to get started on planning your migration from ADLS Gen1 to ADLS Gen2\.
