## Feature **Generally available**: [Zonal metadata](https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/metadata/overview#zonal-metadata) (previously known as project zonal metadata) is custom metadata that you define at a zonal scope within a project and provides information about VMs in that specific zone. Zonal metadata helps you with fault isolation and provides greater reliability. By setting custom zonal metadata, you gain more control over the metadata for VMs in your project and limit the impact of any incorrect metadata updates to VMs within a specific zone.
