As API estates grow, managing individual custom domains and certificates for every subdomain can quickly become operationally complex and difficult to scale. Without wildcard support, every new subdomain — whether payments.api.contoso.com, inventory.api.contoso.com, or orders.api.contoso.com — requires its own hostname registration and certificate, meaning a team onboarding ten new API surfaces generates ten separate domain and certificate management tasks. With this update, Azure API Management Premium v2 and Standard v2 now support wildcard entries in custom hostnames, allowing a single entry like \*.api.contoso.com and a single wildcard certificate to cover all subdomains automatically — no per-subdomain configuration required.
