We’re pleased to announce that Azure Migrate now generally supports discovery and assessment of SMB and NFS file shares hosted on Windows and Linux servers. This gives customers a complete, data-driven view of their file share environment and a clear path to migrate to Azure Files. The capability entered preview in mid-February and is now generally available worldwide. The adoption during public preview has been strong, with hundreds of customers creating file share assessments, actively planning and executing migrations to Azure Files.
Key benefits include:
1. Discover and review on-premises SMB/NFS shares from Windows/Linux environments
2. Group, tag, and filter shares for better planning
3. Generate business cases comparing Azure Files and on-premises costs
4. Assess shares with Azure Files SKU recommendations based on region, redundancy, media type, and performance
5. Alternately, evaluate move to Azure VMs for quick lift and shift rehost
This enhancement streamlines migration planning, reduces guesswork, and speeds up transitions to Azure Files, especially for complex environments.
Getting started: Use Azure portal to set up discovery and run Azure Files assessments in your Azure Migrate project.
